Self-Esteem OR Ego?

Self-esteem is not the same as ego, or, is it?

Why are self-esteem and ego often confused? Do some people use them interchangeably? Do they make a confusing and inaccurate synonym? Are they two vastly different entities in the human psyche? Do they play vastly different roles? Are both needed to maximize our effectiveness?

Is this difference more than semantics? Are there substantial differences between the two? Are they basically the same thing?

Can definitions clarify the issue? How is Self-Esteem defined? How is ego defined? Is ego about how we are perceived? Is self-esteem about how we perceive ourselves?

“The image that concerns most people is the reflection they see in other people’s minds”–Edward De Bono

What are the effects of large egos? What are the effects of high self-esteem? Is it important to have both

Are you comfortable with your own self-esteem? Are you comfortable with your own ego? Do you strive to increase your ego or your self-esteem or both? In your mind are self-esteem and ego the same thing or not? Do you value high self-esteem? Do you value a big ego?

What tips would you provide to others who wish to develop positive self-esteem and/or control their ego? Which is the most important to examine? Is it self-esteem or ego that impacts life the most? Or are they equally important?

  1. I think the biggest issue is for people to look at themselves with humility. Humility understands that one has worth, and it also understands that one is no better than anyone else. If a person has an ability that enables them to propel further than another person, that ability is a gift. It wasn’t earned. It isn’t deserved or not deserved. It doesn’t make that person greater than anyone else. Nor is anyone else less because they lack the gift. Yes, we all have abilities and gifts that others don’t have, but humility recognizes that these gifts are given to us for a purpose, a purpose to build up the world around us. To be able to say, “I have worth and value, but I am not better than anyone else because of my gifts” is the sign of self-esteem that has the ego tamed.
