We never really know do we?
Do most of us live our lives unaware of the effect we have on others? Do we share with others, but often not know what is taken from what we share? Unless someone relates the effect of our influence, how do we know? Is it rewarding to discover that in fact, we did have a positive impact on someone?
While there is sometimes an immediate impact, does it often take time for someone to digest our input and make it their own?
Is it important to share, despite the lack of feedback? Do we continue to teach, mentor, coach, and encourage others without knowing the effect of our efforts? Do we continue, even when we are initially rebuffed in our efforts to encourage and teach?
As we think back on our lives do we remember important things we learned? Do we often even remember from whom we learned it?
“I know what I have given you…I do not know what you have received.”― Antonio Porchia
Would it be accurate to say that some of what we remember is a legacy from one who shared something that resonated within us-often over time?
What is your mindset about sharing of yourself with others? Do you share only when you want to make a point? Do you share knowing that what you present may or may not affect someone? Are you comfortable with expressing your thoughts, knowing that is up to the recipient to decide how to respond them?
Please share your thoughts on sharing with others, especially the young!
I like to think I only share and speak into others’ lives when I feel it’s the right thing to do in the moment, but I’m sure my ego takes over sometimes and gets in the way. Still, I trust that even my egoic actions will ultimately result in benefit to someone. As you say, one can never know the ripple effects of what I share with someone today.
