REALLY?

The Opening Your Mind Blog presents questions for contemplation on “really?”

Is “really?” a common reaction to what people say? Are we often surprised, shocked or incredulous about the words that come out of someone’s mouth? Do we do a double take and question what we heard?

Do we often wonder if people gave any prior thought to what they would say? Do we question whether they even opened their mind or engaged any filters before speaking?

Is it obvious that some people say things because of their shock value; irrespective of the veracity of the statement? But is it not also obvious, that some people speak without realizing that they are making confusing, contradictory, or irrelevant comments?

“Think before you speak, and don’t say everything you think.”— Alexander Lebed

Do we come to expect this response to the often-irrational speeches of politicians? Can common conversation also elicit such a response?

Do speakers realize it when they say mind boggling things? Do they care?

Is this all tied to the lack of authenticity, congruity and even veracity in our culture? Is verbal communication, a form of artificial intelligence, or does it just reflect a lack of intelligence?

Do you sometimes have the “really?” response to your own comments? Do others? Are you surprised by the careless and confusing talk you hear? What suggestions do you have; to help people say what they mean and mean what they say.
