2023? 2024? One Second?

What is a year? Is it an arbitrary measurement of time and maybe space? What does it represent?

At midnight, as the ball drops in Times Square and all around the world people celebrate the new year, what does it signify? Does the world change during that one second between one year and the next? Did 2024 start different from the end of 2023? Even in 2000, at the Millenium change, did the world change? If the world is basically the same, what does change?

“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on.”
— Hal Borland

Does the change in year signify a mindset change? Do people believe or want to believe that 2024 will be better than 2023? That they will be more successful this year than last? Does this depend more on what occurred during the previous 365 days, the 8,760 hours, the 525,600 minutes and the 31,536,000 seconds not on what occurred, at the last second when the official year designation changed?

Is perhaps the best thing of the change from one year to the next, the opportunity to evaluate ourselves from a growth and development perspective? What did we learn? How did we change? What habits did we create or change? How did we challenge ourselves and what was the effect? How have we changed during the past year? What can and what will we do that will make 2024 better than 2023? Will we embrace the opportunity for change, or will we strive to maintain the status quo, not rocking the boat or leaving our comfort zone?

In essence, is the excitement of the new year more about me and how I have changed than the minute change of time in the universe?

Will 2024 be a great year for you? What will you do this year to make 2025 even better? As you pursue your goals for 2024, will you continue to assess your progress and continually adjust your path to stay on course.
