Memories?

Memories! The pleasant and the positive, the negative and the unpleasant; memories are imbedded in our subconscious minds and show up periodically in our conscious mind!

What makes a memory? Why are some memories so long lasting, even if they are of seemingly insignificant incidents? Why do some unpleasant memories persist for so long?

Is it important to remember, that our memories are a snapshot of an experience? Is it an interpretative perspective rather than a true historical, factual representation?

Memory is never a precise duplicate of the original… it is a continuing act of creation.” ~ Rosalind Cartwright

There is obviously a plethora of neurological explanations for the occurrence of memories, but what are the emotional and psychological factors that enter into the retention of memories?

If we examine short-term and long-term memory, what triggers retention? Is memory something under the purview of the subconscious? Is it possible to control our memories, to decide what we remember? Is it possible to choose to repress or accept our memories? Do emotions enhance or interfere with retention? Or both?

What is your earliest memory? Why is it significant? Do you intentionally take action to remember specific events? Is it different from trying to remember facts?
